RE: JPOR: RE: Carb problem?
I was thinking that all the excess fuel would get burned up and from the
combustion and that the plugs would foul. I was thinking that it would be
similar to when a choke stays closed too long and the engine will stall from
too rich of a mixture. But, then again if the mixture does become too rich,
maybe the engine stalls because the mixture is wrong and won't burn?

I'd guess that either the carb is leaking fuel down thru the intake
manifold, into the combustion chamber, and past the rings into the oil, or
the carb is just too frakin big for the 258 and all the unburnt fuel from
the combustion process is getting past the rings.

Subject: JPOR: Carb problem?
Riddle me this! If gasoline is getting into the oil, is it a carb problem?
When a guy called me about this problem, I didn't see how it could be. But,
then he said that when he takes the carb (a Holley) off and replaces it with
the original carb, the problem goes away. He says the gas evidently really
pours in because he has to change the oil so much. He has a 258, 6 cylinder
that he recently rebuilt. Based on his description, I'm baffled. I would
think that if the diaphragm in the fuel pump went the gas could get in, but
then you would probably notice the difference in the lack of power. Any
"best guesses"? Are there any problems inherent with the Holley carb that
would cause this problem? He was thinking that maybe the Holley is too much
carb for the motor, but if that were the case all that would happen is that
he would blow black smoke, and foul the plugs, right?
