The lines are supposed to get tighter as you zoom in.  Is this not happening 
with yours?

<< I have been using the Garmin GPSIII+ for about 6 months.  The street maps
 from MapSource are good, and down load well with lots of information.
 However, I'm disappointed with the MapSource TOPO maps.  The elevation lines
 are not as defined as I had hoped.  I'm headed to Moab next week and plan to
 use the GPS to track the trails I take and add them to my TOPO maps for
 future reference.  Should be fun >>
