JPOR: 258 year ID

I met a local guy the other day who is doing a frame up restore on a CJ7.  It
is an 86 Laredo.  He bought it along with the majority of parts (minus engine)
from an 80 CJ7 and is trying to identify the year of the 258 that is currently
installed in the 86.  He suspects that it is an earlier 258, due to the
exhaust manifold.  I wouldn't know what to look for.
Is there a ser # location or something that he should look for to figure this
out?
