I would suggest you going and purchasing a "How to Rebuild Your Small Block XXX
Motor" where XXX is the type of engine your working on.  I learned how to do this
many moons ago on my Chevy 350.  There are lots of things to think about and it
sounds like you may not have done this before.  A good "How to rebuild it...."
book will give good helpful tips and suggestions as well as recommended tools and
why to use them.  Any book store would have them for relatively cheap.  Might be
a good thing for you to do.
