RE: JPOR: Grinding away at an Axle.

Brad, did you call Joe's Auto in Hastings? He specializes in older Ford
stuff and last I was there he had about 10 D44's from F150s. He may have the
F250 you're looking for. He's a bit on the high side, they cost 150/ea, but
he'd sell for less if you only wanted housing, gears, but no outers.

Just picked up my Ford Dana 44 High Pinion straight
axle this week. Chris W. how did you grind all the
extra brackets away? I think I recall you saying it
took over 3 hours? Anyone else ever work with a Ford
1/2 ton front end? Looks like I have a lot of steel
to remove! I'm looking for any shortcuts anyone has!

Just incase anyone on the list is thinking of
picking
up one of these I thought I would give my thoughts.
First if you can find a F250 Dana 44 pick it up, a lot
less work as they came with leaf springs (Read: less
brackets to remove/change). Problem is the cheapest
one I could find was $450.00. If you don't want to
spend that much look for an early style Ford D44 HP,
not to be confused with the Ford D44 low pinion axle
(the high pinion is stronger). The difference between
the early and later styles Ford 1/2 ton Dana 44 HP
axles are how the brackets are attached. The early
style has four brackets welded on, with four main
welds. The later style has the mounting brackets
mounted on a tube that was slid over the axles tube,
then welded on, other words a lot more to remove. If
you can get the early style its much less work if you
are going to run it under anything other than a Ford.
I was able to find a complete axle at a local yard for
$150.00. Then I was at the local Pull-A-Thon at
U-Pull-R-Parts (All the parts you can carry 20' for
$35.00) and saw a 79 Bronco coming into the yard. I
picked up the Front Ford D44 HP Axle for $90.00
		lock-out to lock-out.
