RE: JPOR: Starter woes

Seems to me that a lot of this could be avoided by just biting the bullet
and buying a new starter from the get-go. I believe in donor vehicles for
some parts, but not electrical, and brake stuff. I HATE electrical problems
and I am sure most people can relate.

Lets see now.
The starter on a ford (amc) engine has an external soleniod. The solenoid is
located on the fenderwall. It has a Battery + wire, a large wire going to
the starter motor, an ignition start start wire (small) and a wire going to
the coil to bypass the ballast resistor (if its an old engine/points
ignition system). Jumping the starter motor means to get a small gauge wire
with alligator clops on both ends (or just a wire with both endas stripped),
attach/hold one end on the batt + solenoid stud (make sure the tranny is in
neutral, as the vehicle will move when the started is engaged if the tranny
is in gear) Touch the other end of the wire to the smaller solenoid
terminals, one at a time. The small terminal marked s should energize the
solenoid, causing the starter to spin, turning the motor over.....the small
terminal marked I will have no effect on the solenoid. The engine should not
start as long as the key is off. The starter motor will crank, engine may
fire because of the backfeed to the coil from the I terminal, but as soon as
you disconnsct the jumper, the starter should stop cranking, end engine
should stop.....

I just got a rebuilt started from a local auto electric shop (reputable
place). Cost was about $50. It will last a couple a years, then I'll install
the spare & buy another rebuilt to carry as a spare.......

Good luck.

PS. I have given my spare rebuilt starter to jeep owners with failed
starters on the trail twice now, with the understanding that they would send
me a replacement starter when they get back home. It's worked out both
times, they even sent me new starter motors.....
