I'm a bit baffled. You say this noise was coming from the solenoid. You
replaced the solenoid and it still makes a grinding noise?
Solenoids should just go 'click'. The only way I can imagine a solenoid
would ever make a grinding noise is if it is quickly moving back and forth -
which to me would imply either a bad ground, or as someone stated earlier, a
bad connection to the ignition switch (maybe the switch itself).
Did you try hotwiring the solenoid? (disconnect the starter first!)
