Noted. I guess I'm just not wild about throwing random parts at a
problem like this. I was hoping there was some sort of test I could
do (without specialized equipment) to verify what might be faulty.

Remember that '87 GW I talked about getting a few weeks ago? I never
did talk to the lady (left lotsa messages), but the rig is still sitting
unmoved on the curb in front of her house. Either she changed her mind,
or she didn't get any offers. I'm gonna try calling again and see if
she's still interested in selling. If I had a newer parts rig, I'd
be more inclined to randomly swap in parts til I found what was wrong.

Ah. Aka "drive assembly" in the TSM. I just replaced that this week.
I assumed it was the cause of my noises (couldn't localize them from
the drivers seat). When I pulled the starter, the bendix gears were
chewed up, but the flexplate gears were fine. I replaced the bendix
gears, reinstalled the starter, and got the same noises, which I now
know were coming from the solenoid all along. It's gone downhill from
there.
