I would think that if the catalytic converter is partially clog that it may
allow the engine to run at low rpm and not at higher rpm. But, since you
mentioned that it wasn't too old, I would shy away from this as being the
problem, unless the vehicle had other engine problems that caused the
converter to go bad prematurely. That gas cap cure thing seems interesting.
I've never heard of that but will have to remember that solution.

Ah, okay. I don't think mine (Ford TFI) does, but I remember
something like that on the old 4.2L.

If all else fails, I'll replace the cat, but unfortunately the
whole exhaust is welded together so I can't check it without
cutting one of the pipes...
But the other thing is, I'd expect a plugged cat to cause this
kind of trouble ALL the time, not just when the engine's warm.
