Re: JPOR: 3.8L identification
Even vs Odd fire is easy to determine, first off if it has points it's
an odd fire. If not you'll have to pull the cap off the distributor and
look at the spacing of the contacts, evenly spaced is an even fire
unevenly spaced is an odd fire. If it's an even fire you do not have a
225 (they were all odd) but it could be either a 231 or 4.1L. Odd fire
engines have a stronger crank but even fire engines idle smoother. If
it's running a factory 4 barrel carb it's probably a 4.1L (or someone
swapped the 4.1L heads onto the 3.8, it's a bolt on).
More useless Buick knowledge...
Grand National turbo chargers are available (but hard to find) and will
bolt onto a 3.8L boosting you up around 300hp. 3800 heads won't bolt
onto a 3.8L but if you swap in a complete (non metric bolt pattern) 3800
you can run the EFI with coil packs. 3800's also had a super-charged
option so you could produce 245hp.
