Thanks for the reply.  I does seem like we got that in backwards :-(
Andreas is planning to split the case apart again, but leave it on the
vehicle this time.  Cleaning and taking EVERYTHING apart this time will
not be essential.  Hopefully he can get that ring turned around that was
the only problem.  We leave for Moab in 6 days and I think he's gonna
need the option of using 4wd out there:-)
