NP231 re-assembly
Last Sat I helped a friend, Andreas rebuild his t-case. We tried to
keep careful track of how things came apart for re-assembly. At one
point the synchro ring was picked up and examined...and then the
realization that we didn't know which direction it came out. There is a
center section of the ring where the teeth are tapered to nothing and
back to teeth. The length of the teeth on both sides of this area is
different. We went based on a picture in the Jeep FSM and put the
shorter end of the teeth toward the front of the vehicle.
Everything tested out normally on the bench after we got things together
ran through the shift ranges and back one time.
Andreas reports that there are "nasty sounds" coming from the t-case
when he tries to shift into 4wd.
Can anyone confirm the direction of this synchro ring? or think of
anything else that we may have screwed up during re-assembly?
