Re: JPOR: Manual tranny advice
Yeah, what Dallas said.
Here's a bit more info re: the Scout T19.
It mounts to the bellhousing using studs with nuts inside the bellhousing,
so you either have to take the tranny out with the BH as a unit, or weld
'ears' on the tranny case and mount it to the BH Jeep/Ford style.
The Scout T19s were available with either the 6.3 that the Ford T18s had, or
in a 4.x ratio. Obviously, the 'wide' ratio is more desirable for
off-roading.
IH trannys have a longer input shaft than Jeep CJ or Ford, but IH input
shafts are shorter than Jeep J series (shorter than both the 6 or 8 cylinder
version).
IH actually used the AMC 258 for a while and there is a stock bellhousing
that will mate the Scout T18/19 up to an AMC engine. Good luck finding one
though. It took me a couple of months of perusing ads and calling vendors
to locate one. Two advantages: 1) cheaper (but not my much) than getting a
new input shaft 2) The bellhousing is much stronger (cast steel?) than the
aluminum BH used by Jeep.
I'm in the process of putting together an AMC 360, Scout T19, Ford NP205
using no aftermarket adapters. (Rick B, are you out there?) From
everything I've been able to gather, I'll only have to have a groove
machined into a a Ford T18 4wd mainshaft to replace the mainshaft from the
T19 and the NP205 will be a bolt up. (Does anyone know how to reach Rick B?)
Hopefully, this will be coming together in the near future. I'll be sure to
post the results, pitfalls, gotchas and woo-hoos of this setup when I'm
done.
