Manual tranny advice

The T19 is an advanced version of the T18. The T98 was the
transmission with the oiling problems and predated the T18 and T19.
The main difference between the T19 and T18 is that the T19 has the
syncronized 1st gear and the T18 doesn't. The AA converson kits are
for the Ford T19 and Ford T18 2wd transmissions. As far as I know
the Ford T19's 1st gear is only 5.13 and the T18 is 6.xx.
Supposedly some Scouts had a T19 with a low first gear but the bell
housing mount is odd. I put a T19 in my CJ8 last fall using the AA
T19 to D300 conversion kit. This kit is the same as the T19 to
NP231 kit. You have to replace the output shaft of the T19 with one
that mates up to the D300. I replaced a T5 transmission and didn't
have to change drive shaft lengths. The T19 to D300 adapter has the
transmission mount and it bolts in existing holes in my stock skid
plate. I used a bell housing from a T176 and I didn't have to drill
any new holes. I did have to get the AA clutch pilot bushing since
it rides in the outer step on your fly wheel. The T19 is much
harder to find than the T18. Mine was out of a 86? F350 with a 460
engine and was the 2nd one the salvage yard had ever seen. It has
double pto covers and the T18 has one pto cover. If you want the
lower 1st gear then the T18 would be better. I am planning on
putting a crawler box in so I didn't need the lower 1st gear. Steve
Smith did a nice write up on installing a T18 and I just followed it
to install the T19. I bought the conversion kit from Border Parts
and I also got new input and output shaft bearings since I was going
to have it apart any.

Good Luck
