the creaking and groaning might be from all the added stresses on the
steering box mount due to a dropped pitman arm. I'd guess (and it's a weak
guess) that a steering box brace would get rid of that groaning. A better
giess might be that the steering box is having one hell of a time trying to
turn those big tires and the groaning sound is just the overloaded box doing
it's job.
I would also imagine that his ride would improve if he modified the pro-comp
shocks like this:
1) remove them from the Jeep
2) find a good, sturdy table to set them on
3) get a 5lb engineer's hammer
4) bash the crap out of them and replace them with Rancho 9000's :-)

I received this e-mail from a club member.  He has just started wheeling
and added a lift to his TJ.  He has a question I thought one of you could
help him with. I haven't riden in a TJ let alone worked on one yet.
