I'm kinda looking at this same thing myself.

A friend of mine has done the sm420 swap - you don't mention if you have =
a 4 banger or a 6 cyl or whatever. I know that with the 4 banger, you =
can use the bellhousing from an s10 pickup and have it machine for the =
CPS. If you have a 6 cyl or other engine, then you pretty much have to =
get the bellhousing from Advance Adapters - pricey!

Same goes for the sm465 - need a bellhousing from AA.

np435 - some say you can use the bellhousing from an earlier (76 cj7) 3 =
spd bell housing.

In any case, you will need an adapter between whatever tranny you use =
and your np231 - unless you use the xcase that came with the tranny (in =
the case of the 435), but that usually defeats the purpose of getting =
the tranny in the first place.

The T-18 might be more swap friendly - I don't know cause I've never =
looked into that route, only the sm420, sm465, and np435.

The main reason for doing these swaps is better crawling, of course, so =
when I look at it I keep trying to find a dual transfer case setup that =
will work (not be too long) so I can get into the 130:1 range without =
having to increase my axle gearing beyond 4.88. The only two I've found =
that look viable are Chris Waterman's setup and Wild Horses setup (same =
as Chris's, but you pay for it), both which use an np435 with a cutdown =
mainshaft going into a 203 reduction box then into a bronco D20. I've =
found the 435, and am in the process now of trying to find a bronco d20.

Anyway, that's what I've found out about tranny swaps so far. Bottom =
line is that pretty much all of them will require at least a bell =
housing and more likely a bell housing and xcase adapter, all of which =
get expensive. I have heard that the np435 can be bolted to a 4.0 vy =
using the bellhousing from an earlier (CJ7) 3 spd tranny, but haven't =
found anyone with direct experience doing this yet.

BTW: I'm in the middle of the grand wagoneer swap. Got the axles ready =
to go to get the lockers and gears in, starting to get brake parts =
prices. Everything was OK until I found out that I need 1 backing plate =
and 2 rotors, which all run about $100 each - $300! ..... so I'm looking =
at disk brakes in the back - if I have to pay that much for drum parts, =
I may be able to upgrade to disks for the same price.

Regards,

Chad

I'm looking for Grand Wagoneer axles for my YJ as some of you =
suggested. And I've now decided to upgrade from my stock manual tranny =
at the same time. I've heard mention of the T-18 and SM420 and would =
like to know pros and cons of each. What modifications are required, =
adapters to my 4.0 and stock t-case, are they longer, and do they shift =
any better than a NP435 which I have experience with.
=20
Appreciate any help.
