img08.jpg Quick Jeep Dana 44 Spindle Nut
If your Jeep has half ton internal hubs, chances are you have the three piece spindle nuts. The inner nut sets the tension on the bearing, the lock washer slides down the slot on the spindle and a pin on the inner nut goes in a hole in the lock washer, and the outer nut holds it all in place. Sometimes, you get lucky and that lock washer slides right down and the pin in the nut goes right in a hole in the lock washer, sometimes it doesn't. Some Ford Dana 44s use a self locking spindle nut that does not require aligning the pin and makes installation much easier.
Project Moneypit Gets Rock Lights
While preparing for a run at Paragon Adventure Park earlier this summer, I found out that one of the trail rides was going to be a night run. Project Money Pit was already equipped with H-4 halogen headlights and a pair of PIAA 520 fog lights. These would help me see farther down the trail, but not help much in rock-crawling situations. It was time for some rock lights.
tsw.3.jpg Work Bench/Tool Storage Chest
Have you ever noticed how thin and flimsy most tool chests and work benches are that you buy from the market? Not to mention the cost of these light weight units! I was in need of a storage chest big enough to hold my handtools and a welding bench strong enough to withstand the rigors of some serious fabrication and pounding.... I needed all of this without the cost normally associated with a unit this big.
Changing a U-joint Changing an Axle Shaft U-Joint at Home
Changing front axle shaft U-joints, what could be simpler? If you are asking that question you have obviously never dealt with severely rusted joints from an older street driven Jeep that's never been in 4wd and has an open knuckle front end. Many a Jeeper has discovered that newly acquired Jeep that has 'never been off-road' equals rusted front axle shaft U-joints that are thoroughly seized into the shafts as well.
OME Add-a-Leafs in the Cherokee XJ rear
About a year after installing the original Old Man Emu lift, the Cherokee is sagging. The rear leafs have settled an inch and the extra weight we're carrying now makes it worse. The solution is to insert lift blocks and/or an OME Add-a-Leaf into my existing spring pack, adding some lift and increasing the spring rate.

Tales from the Trails
East Coast Hardcore: Big Dogs Event in Virginia
When thinking of extreme four-wheeling events, most people think of places like Moab, Farmington, or the Rubicon. The folks at BIG DOG Productions are trying to add another location to that list, and it is found on the East Coast. For three weekends a year, BIG DOG Productions opens up 3,500 acres of private land near Winchester, Virginia, to licensed 4-wheel drive vehicles.
Girls Get Dirty 2 and Fall Fest
With the cool weather of autumn upon us, it was time to visit Paragon Adventure Park for the Girls Get Dirty 2 and Fall Fest. This event was sponsored by Paragon Adventure Park, Off Camber Crawlers, and 4x4Wire. The event was designed, in part, to encourage ladies to take the driver's seat and hopefully come away with a different perspective of wheeling. Follow along as Laurie Hollatz tells the story of this fun-filled weekend.
Dakota Territory Challenge 2001 Dakota Territory Challenge
The Dakota Territory Challenge has a reputation for hardcore trails, and with good reason. The best trails are offered only to those with big tires, lockers at both ends and a winch.
Disability Day Trail Ride
Saturday, October 13 was a memorable day. I left my home and headed up Highway 67 along a route travelled many times for desert four wheeling trips. The destination was Borrego Springs; for a trail ride to escort a group of disabled persons into the great outdoors. I have seen these sights many times. For most of the guests, this was their first trip to the desert.
