This easy modification will allow you to mount a CJ style mirror to your YJ and have the passenger side mirror visible through the window instead of through the windshield. Note that this modification may allow the passenger door to contact the mirror when the door is opened, but by simply putting a few twists in the limiting strap on the door (thus shortening the strap), you can adjust just how far the passenger door opens. This modification is not required for the drivers side.
What you need:
Using the mounting brackets that are included with the mirrors, mount the brackets on your existing windshield hinge. The stock mirror arm orientates the mirror in a vertical fashion, thus resulting in the side mirror being visible through the windshield. This modification will orientate it more horizontal (see 1st and 3rd photos below for a comparison).
Using the stock mirror arm, cut the arm off just in front of the stock bolt hole location. This will shorten the arm by an inch or so. Insert the mirror arm into the bracket using the supplied bushings and adjust the angle of the arm so that it is almost horizontal. I used an angle of approximately 16 degrees. I found it helpful to use a friend to adjust the mirror and mirror arm while I sat in the drivers seat. Mark and drill a new bolt hole at the desired angle. Install the mirror arm into the bracket and tighten the bushing. Some further adjustments may need to be made to the mirror to get it where you want it.
