I have the W56 (5-speed) in my 88 truck. It is extremely durable, easy to work on. It would make a great upgrade to your transmission and they are inexpensive in the wrecking yards and inexpensive to overhaul if you are willing and capable. There is no adjustment on the shifter. I don't recall one ever wearing out, (shifter), but I have replaced the shifter rods in the transmission due to excessive slop (along with a major overhaul). It should be noted that the usual culprit for a sloppy shifter is the bolts coming loose that hold the shifter assembly to the trans.
