The "long thing" you were describing are the coil packs which are attatched to the spark plug boots. There are three of them, one for every two cyl. You will have to remove some brackets to get them out of the way. The spark plugs are deep in the same hole that the coil packs come out of. and you will have to use the correct combination of extensions/U-joinds/socket to get the plugs out. The other side has the same deep wire boots but no coils mounted on top of them and will be a little easier to get to. It's been a few years since Ive done this job but I've done it twice and never had to remove the intake so keep that in mind. If I remember right you may have to remove the throttle body to get it out of the way. If so this may be a good time to clean it as well.

Another thing, If you decide to replace the Spark plug wires you WILL have to remove the intake to gain access to back of the engine for routing of the wires. It would be a good Idea to perform checks on your coil packs while you have then out to change the plugs the chiltons should provide you with the testing procedures.
