You may have picked up on this but the oil burning problem was limited to 98-01 sometime. Supposedly the engines with redesigned piston rings also have screw-in PCV valves, as opposed to push-in (I heard this for the 3.5L, but should apply to the 3.2L also. The 3.5 is just a stroked 3.2).

Some people have had success with Rotella or other diesel-rated high-detergent oils that can keep the piston oil ring holes clear of gunk.
