Purchasing an Amigo - things to look out for

Hi all - I'm in the market for a toy and have my eye on a 2nd generation Amigo - V6, 4x4, automatic, soft top. Unfortunately, you all love them so much that there are hardly any for sale. I drove an hour to test drive one and really liked the Amigo but that particular vehicle was trashed. Next closest...2 hours away. Beyond that...requires a one way airline ticket and a 2 day drive home.

So, since I'm going to have to travel to get an Amigo I get 1 shot to test drive, check it out and purchase. If I can get it to a local shop for a once over what specifically should they look for? What tests or diagnostics should I have done? When I test drive it what warning signs or red flags should I keep my eye and ears open for?

Finally, I've read much about the oil issue and at first was put off by it, but now it seems par for the course. Its either add oil once in a while or get beat to death driving a Wrangler around every time you get in it. I'm leaning towards the oil for sure! So...what is the current consensus on brand/type/weight of oil in a 100k + V6 engine?
