'01 Rodeo: Need Help Identifying A Whirring Noise

Several months ago my Rodeo (’01 LS V6, manual trans.) started making a rather unique sound. There is apparently some sort of valve (emissions maybe) located possibly above the transmission. After about 30sec from a cold start, it makes a kind of “whirring gerble” sound, that fluctuates in pitch with the engine rpm. After warming up it stops, but during that time it is rather annoying. Has anyone run across this in the past, or possibly have an idea what it may be? Thanks for any insight!
