Same problem with mine....I think the power steering valves are stuck and do not respond immediately to small steering inputs and to road forces that tend to deviate the wheels and that would normally trig the oil pressure accordingly to compensate. Really annoying when the road is gouged...car jumps left and right ..
The play is mechanically built-in and normally the hydraulic valves take action at minimal steering input...so in fact the mechanical drive would not act but now, it goes to the full play of the valves...and even requires raw human power. I got used to that but not my wife...so she bought a new SX4. I will not change anything....not worth the car value and I can handle it....
