Most folks make the same mistake the first time. Look inside the distributor cap and you'll see that the #1 tower is diverted through a tunnel and the cylinder fires when the rotor is toward the rear of the engine. When you install the distributor, the rotor should be pointing toward the center of the firewall.
When setting the timing, the wire inside the deadend plug under the wiper motor should be grounded - then set the lead to 5° BTDC.
