John B - I found the timing belt procedure in the soft copy I have, so I'm going to print out that section and see how it goes. Appreciate the offer, and may take you up on it depending on what I find.

DougH - Don't think you are off on this at all. Did some searching around and found this informative post. (post 2 in this thread)

Timing belt

My guess at this point is that with the timing marks lined up on the cams, I'm off two teeth. (Still need to verify) This says to me that the "mechanic" that did the timing belt on this engine and sold me the truck didn't set the belt on the crank two teeth before TDC, instead lining all of the timing marks up and setting the belt on the crank. Since it started and ran, I'm guessing he assumed it was fine and put it up for sale. There are mixed opinions on whether two teeth off would be enough to cause valve train damage, but I drove 600+ miles like this and hot rodded the engine a bit towards the end thinking I needed to burn the crud out from this engine from sitting for a while. Not good. I think I'm dealing with a multitude of problems right now, and it's going to take a while to sort it all out. My alternator failed, so that could be why it wouldn't stay started, but doesn't explain the rest of it.
