Looks stock to me. Beautiful gun. If you want a decent carry load that will at least give you a fighting chance against some bear, but not hurt with the recoil of full house or +P .44 mag, I like to shoot Buffalo Bore low recoil .44 mag in 250 grain keith style hardcast. They call it low recoil, but it's no .44 special. I'd say just a notch below full house mag load, which is probably on par with many standard .44 mag commerical loads these days.

If you could get a spare set of grips, you "might" be able to belt sand the back side of the lower part of the grip to make them narrower. The only thing is, I'm not sure if that would cause a gap or not, since may not really be a way to cinch in the grips at the bottom. But might be worth experimenting on.

Ruger sells these grips if you want an extra pair to work with. They are listed as New Vaquero grips, but are the same ones use on the 50th annivesary models.
