I am new to this site, but thought I would see if anyone might could shed some light on my problem. I have a 96 full size montero with the 3.0 SOHC engine. It has recently started making a tapping sound from the top of the engine. It does it almost always when idling, sometimes stopping for a few seconds. For the most part, It stops when I pick up the engine speed. Im running 10w40 oil. Just changed it about 1000 miles ago. It actually started a little while after changing it. I want to stop the noise, but Im wondering if anyone has experience with this. I dont want to let a mechanic start guessing with me footing the bill.
