Our sharp blu-ray player also plays standard DVD's and with the HDMI cable is supposed to semi-upgrade standard DVD's to high def. Disney & Warner Bros. also are backing blu-ray and will not release anything in HD DVD. Universal, IIRC, is backing HD DVD along with one other studio.
