Yeah, it's a sickening feeling when you're sitting in your truck and you hit the switch and you hear the winch but you don't go anywhere. You're waiting for something to break or snap. But, it happens, even with the best winches. Fortunately, my Warn 9000i has a thermal shut off. Twice I've overheated it and it shut down until it cooled without any damage. My tera low gearing also helps. In low/low the gearing more closely matches the winch speed.
