Thanks, guys.
The tranny is now held by the 2 outside bolts and sitting on the floor jack transmission jack adapter with the t-case still on it. Tomorrow I'll see how to get the t-case off and hopefully pull the old transmission. Need to order a bunch of parts, too - hoses, gaskets, fuel fitting o-rings, a bolt to replace the mangled one and so forth.
Eddy, if this transmission works ok when it's installed and you still want a floor jack adapter, I'll sell you this one 'cause I don't want to do this job again at my age and/or beyond. 
I now understand DougB's post title - "What was I thinking?" It seemed like such a good idea at the time. 
Whatever a transmission tech charges is worth it, but folks wouldn't believe it until they pull one of these.
