The oil pump parts have been cleaned, pump face painted, seals/o-ring installed. I found it a little strange that the FSM calls for the metal ring seals that hook end-over-end on the pump hub (and there were two still left in the overhaul kit), but the ones that came out of the transmission were plastic - probably delrin.... overhauled before?
After installing the drive and driven gears, checking all required clearance values (all fine), the next step calls for a special tool to align the two pump halves - it's a form of band clamp, much like a large diameter (but short) piston ring compressor. The diameter of the pump body is about 7.5" and I didn't have anything that large - checking the auto stores and Sears, I found a piston ring compressor for diesel tractors that expanded to 7" diameter - not enough. So, off to the special tool department at Home Depot for a piece of flat metal strap and I made this tool as a band clamp:
Here it is in use with the torque converter used a a work stand:
The oil pump is installed in the case:
The oil pump bolts are only finger tight until I find an answer to a couple of questions:
1) The FSM calls for 3M ART 8660 sealant under the oil pump mounting bolt heads... I can't find any information on what type of sealant it is.... what I cleaned off the bolts looks like a type of RTV. Can I use any hi-temp RTV for this application or is another type of sealant required?
2) Before installing the oil pump I went back and reviewed the ATSG book for anything I might have missed - and there was. There is a dimemsional spec given to measure the overdrive clutch case depth in relationship to the overdrive case - I assume to make certain the assembly is fully seated in the case:
The spec is given as "approx 3.5mm [approx .138"]"... that looks pretty specific to me - my measured depth is .085, resulting in .053" more forward protrusion than the ATSG spec. I can go back through the upper assemblies and see if I can seat them any deeper (should only have to go back as far as just the center support, because it has to align with the bolt holes. How critical is that depth spec? The FSM doesn't list a spec for it - just says measure during disassembly (which I didn't do because it all came apart due to not using an oil pump puller) and the depth should be the same on reassembly. The time to go back and check is now, but I'm wondering how much leeway there might be??
