I'm now starting back on the transmission - went back through the clearances and I'm real glad I took the time to do so. I found a serious assembly error in the front clutch - somehow after I initially checked the clearance I got confused and added another plate and disc, which took away all of the clearance.
Now, when assembled correctly, there is waaay too much piston stroke - even using the thickest plates and discs. I can resolve the problem one of two ways:
1) add in another plate.
2) shave one friction face off of 2 discs and install them back-to-back within the stack.
I first thought I'd add in a plate, but I was told by the folks at the supplier to add it furthest from the piston next to the hub flange. I can't do that because of the thinner of two retainers that is used in that assembly. The thin retainer would effectively separate the hub flange from the added plate, not allowing friction contact and also not allow room to install the hub retainer snap ring.
Which solution is preferred - shave two discs and put them back-to-back near the middle of the stack - or - double two plates in the middle of the stack - or - double the plate next to the piston?
