The real fun begins - the intermediate and output shaft sub-assembly assembly is next:
After removing the frictions, steels and upper planetary gear set, the two halves of the case are held by a retainer - tricky li'l thing when you don't have the correct snap-ring pliers - I used two small screwdrivers - carefully squeezed the retainer tabs (you need 3 hands) and got it to release:
After separating the intermediate shaft from the output shaft, the output shaft can be examined - note the bushing inside the cup (looks ok) - I'm surprised that the milled area in the cup center serves as a bearing race:
Three new ring seals are supplied with the kit and should be installed into the grooves shown on the output shaft:
With a closer examination I found out why I was confused about these rings in an earlier post - the ends interlock - one end must be held while the other is lifted over it to lock into place. When I removed the first original one, I put direct side pressure on it and broke one of the locking tabs - no problem since they're being replaced, but good to know before installing the new ones. This picture is out of focus, but maybe you can see the idea:
The output shaft is now lubed, new sealing rings are installed and it's set aside while I continue to clean the next parts in assembly order:

20.0 hours.
