Eddy - I took your suggestion and did buy a manual - ATSG Transtech for the A40 series. They didn't have the exact manual for the A44DL, but this one's probably close enough. I've already found it useful.
There's a diagram in the ATSG manual that shows 3 small locating bumps on the spring retainer plate in the reverse piston sub-assembly. Their purpose is to capture/locate/center the retainer. I saw the reference, last night but didn't see anything that resembled the protrusions. In looking at the digital picture I picked it up and went back and relocated the retainer to the correct position. Notice the location of the retainer split in the original picture - if you look carefully you'll see the 3 small protrusions on the spring retainer plate just outside the edge of the retainer:
This picture shows the retainer rotated so that it's evenly captured by the 3 protrusions - the split in the retainer is now 180 degrees from one of the protrusions:
Notice the square slot/hole that's now exposed beneath/between the split area of the retainer - I wondered what that was when I installed the spring retainer plate because it didn't lock into anything and it had nothing to do with orientation of the retainer. Since it aligns perfectly with the retainer split when correctly installed, it's obvious that it's used to insert a pick in the hole to stop the retainer from walking during removal.
Do a little work, think about it, read about it, look at it from 15 angles, poke it, think about it some more, scratch head, take a break, think about it, light bulb goes off, fix the mistake and get ready to make another....
So much to learn.......
