Alrighty... I have parts... but I won't post a picture of the pile for fear of scaring anyone who wants to try this. The package amounts to an easter egg hunt - particularly when it's a generic package for several models and the sub-packagages with sub-assembly numbers (which don't correspond to anything Mitsu) do not have any correlation to the sub-assembly you're working on - it's a part from this envelope and a part from that envelope. You're even supposed to have parts left over! I'm now over the big gulp of taking a look at the first transmission kit I've seen and I'm amazed at the lack of organization - that would be an advantage of buying individual OE parts - they'd be individually marked (hopefully correctly ). All you can do is dive in, find what you need and hope it's correct. What I find absolutely necessary is to throw away the old part (particularly o-rings) as soon as I pick up the new one and verify it's correct so I don't get mixed up.
The reverse piston assembly has been cleaned, lubricated, reassembled and installed in the case:
I think that's enough for tonight.
Matt - I see what you mean about the press slipping - I have the little blood blister on my left thumb as proof. I now know how to identify transmission techs at a distance.
Kevin - I asked a few questions about converters but the information was confusing without a reference book to bring home. Apparently the A340 had several versions with different spline counts and pilots. Also the mounting bolt hole spread can be different among the different converters that fit the A340. As an example, the TO26 will fit an A340, but not the AW372L - but the TO32LS is used on some A340s and also on the A44DL, which as you know is the same as the AW372L. It's possible that there are available interchange options, but you will have to be very careful on spline count, pilot design and mounting dimensions.
Also, there was a warning note in the converter box that states the bolts used on the AW372L converter - as installed at the factory - stretch... and should be ground for length before re-using. Here's the notice... divided into the upper and lower halves:
I think I'll at least buy some new torque converter bolts and maybe grind them a bit.
BTW, I've been advised that it's ok to re-use bearings/races so long as they look ok - so that's what I'm doing - any problems anyone see with re-using them?
