DougH - The AW372L was the same from '90 through '94... after that, they changed from hydraulic shift to electric.
Kevin - Thanks for the encouragement - but it's a $100 transmission - not a $1000 .... anyway, that's what I'm doing - playing it by ear to see if this thing's worth rebuilding... I think it is. There's water in it, but it appears to be recent - no rust so far other than the front cover of the oil pump. Anyway, I'm up to my ears in parts already. I can't find an on-line listing for Transtar.
Matt - Thanks for the advice - If I get as far as ordering parts I'll put the best I can in it. I asked the local distributor if he had anything better and he said he didn't.
OK, so 3 hours after beginning, I have a pile of parts. First problem was I didn't have the special tool to pull the oil pump so I ground the jaws of a 2-jaw puller so they had a sharp edge to grab behind the gear and it worked fine - I could turn it by hand:

I think the entire pump was supposed to come out as a unit, but perhaps due to my unfamiliarity and failure to follow directions I didn't hold the pump shaft while separating the bellhousing - so as a result mine came out in pieces:

Valve body removed - the pistons are fun to push and shoot fluid across the room Are these the ones I need a compressor to reinstall? - came out easy with compressed air @ 15psi:
Now I'm stumped - the manual says to drive the cross pin out of the shift shaft in order to remove the cross shaft from the case. I don't see a pin in the shaft - all I see is a dimple through the hole in the outer piece. I've tried a small drift and bent it a couple of times - then tried a tapered punch as shown in the FSM - using a very light hammer - nothing seems to move and if it does, there's no hole in the oppostite side of the shaft for it to fall through - what gives here?:
