I called the dealer and got the name of a local transmission rebuild supplier - very helpful folks. $250 for a complete kit - including a new torque converter which is probably a very good idea... since water and metal was in the unit I can only assume there's a good chance it's in the torque converter also.
That's the price for "generic" friction discs. $5-10 more for Borg Warner - I guess I'd be better off with a name brand, but I don't know - 75% of his rebuilders use the generic discs.
This is beginning to sound almost reasonable if I can find a shop to press the piston springs.
