Matt - thanks for the advice - I didn't see water until I had drained the pan and rolled it over to remove the pan. The water came out along with more oil through the output shaft adapter seal area. The mush on the magnets was a metallic paste - obviously ferrous material. Some of what you saw in the pan were water drops, but some of it was metallic.... not sure what.
Including shipping, I don't have enough money in it to worry about throwing it away, but just enough that the price of paying someone to rebuild it might not make a lot of sense just to get a lockup torque converter. Since my installed transmission is in great shape I have the luxury of time - so I think I'll make this one a winter project and VERY slowly take it apart - do the rebuild myself. I had another project in mind, but this one seems more logical. It's a good way to learn what's in an A/T and how it works.... not that it'll do me much good to know, but if I can do a decent job it might be worth it.
I thought about documenting a rebuild and posting a "how-to", but I would probably end up asking more questions than providing answers.
Kevin - no Bridgeport here... I'll have to either find a spring compressor or get someone else to do the pistons. The camera idea is a must and I've thought about building a 12' extra work table along one garage wall to lay out the parts in the order they come out of the case.
Is it better to buy a rebuild kit from a dealer or somewhere else? If somewhere else, who sells them? I've looked online and not found anything designated as this particular transmission model. Most seem to be the generic Toyota A40 variety.
