Could be several things, but the usual cause is low alternator output. When you hit the key to START, the fuel pump is fed from the start circuit directly, bypassing the fuel pump relay. When the engine starts and the alternator outputs voltage, the ENGINE RELAY should pull in. The engine relay is the one that powers the fuel pump relay (through fuse 12). If the engine relay isn't pulling in, your CHARGE lamp will be lit, is it ?

The fuel pump relay and the engine relay are both in the fuse box under the hood.

You could possibly have a bad MAIN RELAY (doubtful), and that's located on the passenger side, under the bracket.

My bet is a bad/weak battery/alternator not pulling the engine relay in, which in turn is not pulling in the fuel pump relay.

Do you have and know how to use a multimeter ? If so, you can measure the voltage at fuse 12 (there are little exposed points on the top of the fuse usually). Have a helper start the engine and monitor the voltage on that fuse. You should see no volts until the engine starts, then 12-15 volts while it's running.
