I personally have no problem with you calling it a supercharger but the industry elected to separate the two so that there would be no confusion.

Conner,

I missed the election day when that one was voted on ( to call all mechanical compressors superchargers, and take turbine driven pumps out of that designation).

As a referance point I will start with a dictionary.
Websters is pretty well know.

tur-bo-charg-er: A device using a turbine driven by exhaust gases to drive a supercharger on an engine, esp. of a racing car.

Tur-bo : Clipped form of turbosupercharger.

su-per-charge: 1: To increase the power of (an engine), as by the use of a supercharger. 2: same as pressurise

su-per-charg-er: A blower or compressor used to increase the power of an internal combustion engine by increasing the supply of air or combustble mxture to the cylinders beyond that normally pumped in by the pistons at the prevailing atmospheric pressure.

So Websters is not going to back you... But you say industry has a different definition. I consider the SAE to be a good place to look to see how terminology is used.

Looking at this months SAE magazine (Automotive enginering)lets see what they say.

The August 2005 issue of SAE's Automotive Engineering magazine is pretty current, in fact it just arrived today.

If anyone should have it right it seems reasonable it would be them.

Go to page 37 and read the first paragraph (on that page) of an article by Jack Yamaguchi on engine technologies.

Quote:

Key technologies to improve the gasoline engines thermal efficany include direct-injection, supercharging by turbocharger / mechanical supercharging, reduction of friction, lean-burn ... etc

So in an article published by the SAE this month they refer to a turbocharger as a method of supercharging.

Thats pretty hard to ignore, acording to them a turbo is a supercharger.

My take? A turbocharger is a supercharger, current tech article by an international organization use that termanology as does the dictionary.

I also recognize that for many discussion if you use the term supercharger you mean a crank driven pump.

Bottom line is the term supercharger can be applied in two ways, one general and one that is more specific, so my turbo is a supercharger.

web page
Quote:

A turbocharger is an exhaust gas driven supercharger. All superchargers have a gas compressor in the intake tract of the engine which compresses the intake air above atmospheric pressure, greatly increasing the volumetric efficiency beyond that of naturally-aspirated engines. A turbocharger also has a turbine that powers the compressor using waste energy from the exhaust gases. Compressor and turbine have the same shaft, similar to a turbojet aircraft engine.

Kevin

PS are you ready for intercooler vs aftercooler
