... but like most other professions, experience matters most. Its the age old difference between understanding, knowledge and wisdom. ASE certifications means (presumptively) a fundamental knowledge of the underlying basic mechanical theories. Understanding is different from knowledge in that understanding usually comes from experience. Wisdom comes from (hopefully) learning from the mistakes made while obtaining the understanding that the knowledge could have made less painful.
Debatably, wisdom is a gift, some fortunate individuals have this gift from the time of their birth. Only more knowledge and experience comes from mistakes.
Assuming an individual who holds an ASE certification understands basic auto design theories/ concepts could be an expensive assumption when trusting an unknown individual who is ASE certified to repair your 4x4. There is no recourse if the ASE Certified Technician makes repairs to your 4x4, but doesn't resolve your problem. You have to pay the technician for his time and parts!
The individual who designs a better part or system, has wisdom!
