im thinking about purchasing a 99/00 jeep cherokee. ive heard mixed reviews on their reliability, just wondering if anyone here can help me out on my next purchase...
I have a '99 XJ that I bought about 3.5 years ago. It had 36,000 miles on it, and it's now at about 90,000. In my opinion, the 4.0 is one of the better/more reliable American engines made during the '90s. Overall it's been a great rig, but here is the rundown of the problems I've had: 1) The guage cluster (speedo/tach/etc.) would go out from time to time. It's common on late XJs and sometimes can be repaired, but sometimes the connector is faulty and the whole cluster needs replaced. Mine was covered by warranty. 2) The automatic window on the passenger side front door is screwed up. Another common problem with late XJs. Fixed under warranty, but it still has intermittent problems. 3) Jeep brakes aren't that great. The brakes on my XJ are marginal, at best, even with stock tires/rims/etc. The brakes on my '00 TJ are even worse (32" BFGs).

96zjjeeper you have some serious prejudice problems!! This is the second post I have seen you make where you are knocking another manufacturer! So get over your ego issues with your Jeeps, respect every one else's vehicle, and just enjoy the forums!
Good post. I have two (relatively new) Jeeps and an old beat up Toyota that I've owed for 13 years. There are good and bad things about all of them.
