The L series 5 speeds are the one generally considered to be weaker than the other Toyota 5 speed manuals. I'm not sure how much weaker, though. They were found through the 1983 models. I think the W or G series 5 speeds replaced it in 1984 and the same basic tranny design is still used today in some overseas models and the Tacoma trucks through at least last year as far as the W series transmissions that were found in the 22RE fuel injected trucks with manual hubs.

Check out that marlin site. He's generally considered to be the ultimate Toyota tranny and T-case guy on the planet.
