This is quite a thread indeed! I defer to all technical explanations by all previuos posters and I cannot totally disagree with any previous post. I would like to point out that the rest of the vehicle makes a difference on how long an "engine" can last.
For example, an AMC Matador would likely find itself in the junkyard, the first time it needed a transmission. Chevy has had many forgetable body styles, and the Seventies were the era for the emerging plastics technologies that were increasingly used to reduce the materials costs AND assembly labor costs. ALL vehicles suffered in this era. And far as 1970's/1980's engines go, Ford in my opinion has been bedevilled electrically. Body-wise, Fisher Body totally outclassed Fox/Ford. The proof is in the metal as you only see stunt-drivers and collision derby drivers driving 90% GM to 10% Ford.
I think a lot of "engine" durabilty has to do with LOVE! If you love the body/interior, the rest will follow.
My Toyota 4x4 truck has not necessrilly been the most reliable engine I have ever owned! Two headgaskets...hmmm...my iron block/head Chevy small blocks with two to three times the horsepower NEVER popped a headgasket. Yet my truck runs like top, and has never had the carb rebuilt. The body is rust-free (I live in the dry desert), and is on its original starter/alternator/engine/tranny. 100% percent perfect, hardly, but the "truck love" I have for my truck makes me feel the same love that Fred Sanford have had for his pickup.
