I just want to add a comment based on experience -- I've spotted a few friends through many extreme trails and seen 5/16" Rockstomper rope break a couple times. I've seen it fall to the ground and I've also seen it pile up on the windshield in a very hard pull, but it was still safe. This was on a 5K pound trail rig with a Warn HS9500 winch. The primary reason is that the outer surface of the rope became "worn" and a bit fuzzy after using it many times, so it broke after it aged with a LOT of use. And this was with utilizing two of the abrasion protector sleeves at different sections of the rope. If you ask Scott about strength versus age, he'll point out that Amsteel Blue actually gets stronger after a few hard pulls, but that disregards surface "wear". I still highly recommend getting rope, but if you plan to use your winch a lot, I recommend 3/8" rope of whatever brand you want, instead of 5/16".
