Re: Topic Changed - What causes High Voltage

Kirk,

As far as I know, the only thing that causes higher than normal voltages is a bad alternator regulator circuit. That's why I suggested NOT buying the aftermarket alternator. A good local alternator rebuilder will usually use high quality parts and if that doesn't fix it, he'll find your problem.

Anyway, check the battery voltage (at the battery terminals) with the engine off. It should read about 12 volts. If it's lower, suspect a bad cell. Start the engine and repeat the measurement. It should read between 14 and 15 volts. Turn on the headlights and watch the meter. It should drop and come back to the former reading if the alternator is working. If the voltage is much higher than 15 volts, I'd suspect that the aftermarket alternator's regulator is damaged - or maybe never replaced when it was "rebuilt".

Maybe you should take it to a rebuilder and have it checked and immediately call the Carquest store, tell them the problem and ask them to hold your core until you sort out the problem.

Good luck,
Frank
