Ray,

Every big trailer that I've towed with a brake has an actuator in the neck/shaft of the trailer. When you brake the vehicle, the actuator is compressed and causes the brakes to engage on the trailer. I've driven car trailers and large boat trailer behind a V8 Land Cruiser and Ford Bronco351C/Expedition5.7triton.
