my bet would be all the play is in the idler. I'd start there as many times messing with adjusting the box starts it to leaking around and near that stud.
I got ,,,and still have some Gen 1 replacement bushings(white plasticy things) I got from Korum Mitsu. I think the were only $5 or so each. I have a Gen 2 idler on mine now. Got a good deal on it from Rockauto. Pretty easy improvement with no downsides that I,ve seen.
