Eddy, you are the man, sir. Thank you for that. Wish I'd seen it before I went out and bashed my head against a wall.
I will have to give these a try tomorrow. Crawled under the filthy, oil-soaked undercarriage (I suspect rear main seal or oil pan - not cam seal, though I trust the PO when he says its the cam seal), and tried to get that lower starter bolt loose. Figured, if I can get the lower one out, it means I can get the top one out too.
Put a 14mm box wrench on it. NOPE. Tried stringing together a bunch of wobbly joints on a 1/2" drive ratchet (a la JohnnyB). NOPE.
At the risk of getting too far off-topic, I figured I'd share a couple pictures, get some feedback on a couple things, and maybe feel a little better about the world in general if I can make some sense of something automotive again.
(Promise. I'm not ordinarily this whiny. Just had a real biznatch of a couple weeks lately. It's like Exile playing over and over and over...)
Starter bolts. Lying under driver side, looking up LF fender well.

Quite the oil leak. If life settles down for a solid week, I'll be ready to buy many beers and foods and host the AZ Crawlers for a teach-the-rookie-how-to-work-on-manly-things day. (Probably beats making these repairs on the trail.)

I know 4WD works, so I suspect these have to do with indicator lights, maybe? Looks sketch. What am I looking at, here?

Appreciate the continued awesome support I'm getting from you guys. Tomorrow will be a big day. Talking to my insurance company about the lying teenager in the Honda, taking jumper cables to the starter bits, and borrowing the wife's Nissan Juke to run in to the office for a meeting.
This too shall pass...
